Healing Together Dr Kathomi Gatwiri
Healing Together is a service that seeks to bridge that gap by providing therapeutic, supervision and consulting services that “see”, affirm, and respond to the unique experiences of living in a racialised body. At Healing Together, we see you and affirm your experiences as a Black person or a person of colour. As a therapist, I do not adopt a colourblind approach to therapy as that ignores the extent to which race informs the reality and experiences of Black people or people of colour. “Not to seeing colour” erases the experiences of racism, the underlying trauma and the coping (often maladaptive) mechanisms adopted to deal with such experiences.
Are you having second thoughts about getting therapy?
There are many cultural reasons why Black people and people of colour may feel uncomfortable seeking help in the form of therapy. First, the lack of diversity in therapeutic services serves as a hindrance. Sometimes clients just want to work with professionals who can connect to their lived experience. Second, their regular encounters of prejudice while seeking support services including counselling and healthcare may deter them from seeking further help. Third, the cost of therapy may be affordable for Black people who are over-represented in the low social economic demographic.
